Juno storyboard

This is our storyboard we made whilst planning our Juno task.

Juno task

We filmed our own footage. It was slightly rushed as we had to do it within the hour and we wasted a small amount of time trying to find suitable places to film which we could have done beforehand. However the filming was done quickly and we didn't have to do a second take at any point.

The storyboard we made was accurate however it lacked depth and detail. This led to us mistakenly filming some of the shots at the wrong angle. In the future I would add a lot more writing to my storyboards including details about the type of shot and directions for the actor.

The strength of my group was definitely our editing which we accomplished very quickly and easily. Our weakness was the eye for detail when watching the Juno sequence and creating the storyboards which lead to one of the only flaws in our project.

At the time we thought we had all of the footage that we wanted. When we got in and begun to compare the footage we knew that we had all of the footage we needed although some was inaccurate. However we had completed every part of our storyboard within the allocated hour.

We became very quickly familiar with the camera and could use the majority of the functions almost instantly. As a team we quite comfortable with Premiere however we leant about layering the two clips together so we could directly compare them.

Our footage looks quite similar to the original. However there are a few exceptions. In some parts I faced my head down looking at the floor which wasn't done in the original. Also in a few shots the camera angle is different to the original version.

What went well: The editing, speed of production and camera work.

What I learnt: Features of Premiere and about camera shots and effects

What I will do in the future: To take more time planning shots and producing storyboards.

Preimier Pro Editing Task

My first editing task:

We were given the task of using Adobe Preimier Pro to create a music video. We had the choice of clips which including dancing bears, shots of New York and James Bond. From this lesson I learnt about various tools used to edit footage and sound, such as the razor tool and fading music. Towards the end of the lesson I felt much more comfortable with the software due to the experience. I also feel that I could make the clip much better with my new knowledge.

Semiotics

Film poster analysis task

In this image it becomes obvious that Frankie (Danny Dyer) is the main character that the film is focused on. The film tells the story of Frankie who is on the run from South London and looking to build a life of crime, in a firm, set in the Costa Del Sol in the early 80's.

In today's lesson we were taught how to analyse film posters based on 'Semiotics'.

Denotations: What is easily seen when we first look at an image.

  • The characters are sitting around a pool looking relaxed except for Charlie (Tamer Hassan) who is holding a gun in a suit.

Connotations: The feelings or thoughts associated with that image.

  • The blue in the image represents the calmness of Frankie and the life in Spain.
  • Frankie is in the center of the camera angle with the other two characters looking at him. Which links to the plot of the film towards the end where they all wait on his demand.

Film language

Today we learnt about film language. There are four elements to film language these are:

Camera:
Frame, angle level and movement.

Sound:
Music, contrapuntal, dietetic, off screen/on screen, voice over and emotion.

Editing:
Transition, order of narrative and pace.

Mise en scene:
Costume, lighting, actors and props.

Film language analysis

Boyz In The Hood:

The off screen sound immediately sets the tone of the film. Various expletives are used including racist ones with a distinct Afro American accent  This immediately makes the audience picture underprivileged children in American cities.

One of the most powerful parts of the scene is the close up on the American stop sign. The sign is the focus of the image for a long time. This could be interpreted as the directors message to police or government. It is very effective because the audience immediately thinks:

  • Who should stop?
  • Stop doing what?
  • Why should they stop?

Terminator 2:

Freeze close-up shot
The first obvious thing we see is the darkness and the recurring colour of blue. The futuristic weapons make it obvious that the film is set in the future. The villain is in a police costume and the hero is dressed as the traditional 'bad guy' in a leather jacket.

The contrast of the ice from the liquid nitrogen and the burning flames in the steel works is the most noticeable contrast. The close up on the terminator when he freezes and eventually breaks into pieces is the most powerful and notable camera shot during the scene.

Up:
The passage of time in the scene is extremely fast. Almost a whole lifetime is presented in the space of three minutes. This was done in the scene by having Ellie tighten Carl's tie over and over again to show the days passing. Another way the passing of time was shown was the pot of money either being updated or broken to repair something. Both ways are subtle but work effectively.

The long shot of them both walking up the hill and both of them stopping at different points then encouraging the other to climb the hill could show their love for each other.

The sound is constant throughout the scene with the same music being played. However during the part which bad news is given the music dramatically slows down to represent the change in mood.

The Lost Ones

This is our presentation which we worked on. We made a presentation about the film we created which is called The Lost Ones, we gave the presentation on this and we got feedback from people.

Summary of feedback:

Overall people thought that this presentation was very intruiging and we got an overall score of around 70/100 people gave us the best marks based on the narrative and how it was suitable for the target audience and will attract customers. The area which seems we need to improve on was how the narrative fit the genre. The conventions needed to be in place as well.

Mise en Scene

Mise en Scene translates to 'everything on camera'. There are five elements of Mise en Scene these are:

  • Settings and props
  • Costume and make up
  • Facial expressions and body language
  • Lighting and colour
  • Positioning of objects

The setting of a film can show a genre an example of this is in a spaceship the genre will be Sci-Fi.

Genre task

In class we were given the term DISTINCT and told to analyse four film trailers based on it. We were also taught about hybrid genres which is where genres overlap. An example of this is romantic comedy films.
The trailers we had to analyse included:
  • Oculus
  • The Guest
  • The Vow
  • Guardians Of The Galaxy

Oculus: This is a horror film which is shown by the setting of the film which is in a scary house. It is also set at night which is typically associated with horror films. The characters are not given much screen time which suggests they are scared and rushed.

The Guest: This film is a hybrid genre it combines action an thriller. It is set on a battlefield whilst fighting is taking place. The music creates instant impact and fits the action/ thriller genre well. The main character is portrayed as mysterious which adds to the impact of the trailer.

The Vow: I think this film is a romantic film. The glowing sunshine spreads happiness and the music portrays the love felt between the two characters. However the music sets a change in mood when it becomes obvious something bad has happened.

Guardians Of The Galaxy: This film is also a hybrid genre. It is a combination of Sci Fi and Comedy. The props such as weapons and high tech gadgets make it obvious that it is a Sci Fi film. However the persistent element of humour shown in the trailer suggests that it is a hybrid genre.

Nightcrawler: The fast paced shots of dark urban streets immediately suggest the film is going to be a dark thriller. The car crashes and scenes of police flashing lights and barriers lead me to believe that the film could be a hybrid genre of both crime and thriller. The repetitive use of clichés about careers and money portray that the emphasis of the film will be on making money. The trailer promptly ends with the main character on a television set gleefully smiling which implies that the film could use the 'rags to riches' theme.

Genre picture task

In class we were given the task of taking still images to represent a genre. We were given four genres these included:
  • Comedy
  • Romance
  • Thriller
  • Horror
Comedy
In this image we tried to show the genre was a comedy by using a the prop (the wig) which portrays the humorous side to a potential audience.  The stance of leaning over a toilet would make the audience what has happened to lead the person into such a funny situation.

Thriller
We aimed to show thriller by using a briefcase to create intrigue. The facial expression suggests that something bad is going to happen which fits the genre of thriller.

Romantic
Our aim was to show romance in this image. Which we tried to show with the characters holding hands. The wig makes the audience instantly recognize the traditional women and male couple always shown in romantic films.

Horror
In this image we turned the lights out to create darkness which is instantly associated with horror films. The facial expressions suggest fear and the character lurking in the background also makes it clear that the genre is horror.
