Genre task

In class we were given the term DISTINCT and told to analyse four film trailers based on it. We were also taught about hybrid genres which is where genres overlap. An example of this is romantic comedy films.
The trailers we had to analyse included:
  • Oculus
  • The Guest
  • The Vow
  • Guardians Of The Galaxy

Oculus: This is a horror film which is shown by the setting of the film which is in a scary house. It is also set at night which is typically associated with horror films. The characters are not given much screen time which suggests they are scared and rushed.

The Guest: This film is a hybrid genre it combines action an thriller. It is set on a battlefield whilst fighting is taking place. The music creates instant impact and fits the action/ thriller genre well. The main character is portrayed as mysterious which adds to the impact of the trailer.

The Vow: I think this film is a romantic film. The glowing sunshine spreads happiness and the music portrays the love felt between the two characters. However the music sets a change in mood when it becomes obvious something bad has happened.

Guardians Of The Galaxy: This film is also a hybrid genre. It is a combination of Sci Fi and Comedy. The props such as weapons and high tech gadgets make it obvious that it is a Sci Fi film. However the persistent element of humour shown in the trailer suggests that it is a hybrid genre.

Nightcrawler: The fast paced shots of dark urban streets immediately suggest the film is going to be a dark thriller. The car crashes and scenes of police flashing lights and barriers lead me to believe that the film could be a hybrid genre of both crime and thriller. The repetitive use of clichés about careers and money portray that the emphasis of the film will be on making money. The trailer promptly ends with the main character on a television set gleefully smiling which implies that the film could use the 'rags to riches' theme.
