Film poster

Whilst we were filming we found a setting with good lighting and took the opportunity to get take a picture to use for our film poster. Issak used a photo editing app on his phone to add a filter to the image. After doing this we decided that we should add the zombie hand border and text on Photoshop. Below is the finished film poster:

Once the poster was finished I took the image and edited it on places that we could advertise to see how the poster looks in use. My conclusion is that the poster is effective and would attract peoples attention. Initially I was worried that when increasing the size of the image it would make it look grainy but this did not happen after I tested it. My examples of where our poster could be used can be seen below:

News broadcast script

Today in lesson we produced a script for the news broadcast that we will add in our opening sequence. We printed a copy and gave it to our news broadcast actor, Mr Barker.

Filming for the final cut

After we decided what we needed to change from the first cut to make our second better we started filming. On the right is us creating the time-lapse that we decided to use to show Issak turning into a Zombie. We made Issak sit in front of the green screen so that we can put videos of parties in the background when editing.

The whole process took a couple of hours to complete. Archie applied the face paint to Issak whilst I took pictures gradually throughout the process to show the progression of turning Zach into a zombie-like state.

Now we have the time-lapse to edit we only have the news report left to film. This will be done later this week and the edited into the opening in time for Friday's deadline.

Plan of changes

After sifting through all of our feedback forms me, Issak and Archie chose three from separate piles which we thought were the most helpful and accurate. After doing this we discussed as a group what changes we need to make and the priority of the changes. The changes which we we'll make can be seen below in order of priority.

1. Improve the ending of the opening.

The ending on our first draft was very poor by our own admission and was the main criticism from the feedback. Therefore it is only right that this is our first priority to improve this week. I suggested having a time lapse at the end. We have planned that Archie will paint Issak's face to make him look like a zombie and I will take pictures gradually throughout the process which when collated together will be a time lapse. This will make it much more obvious to the audience that Zach is turning into a Zombie and will look much more professional than our current ending.

This is a tutorial I watched after we agreed on a time lapse at the end. Obviously it could not be directly applied to our one as the setting will be different. But this was hugely helpful to watch as the fundamental concepts of a time lapse were explained in a way that was easy to understand to me. I will take much of the advice given in this video into account when we create our time lapse.

2. Make the story/plot more obvious.

This was a reoccurring criticism from our feedback. Many people said they weren't sure what was happening or that the story line lacked depth. To improve this Issak suggested that we implement a news report into our opening sequence which will explain the effect that the drug has on the users. We will use the interview room to conduct the interview as it looks similar to the setting of news reports. We also identified that we need someone older, wearing a smart suit, to be the news reporter. We asked our head of sixth form, Mr Barker, to do this and he has kindly agreed to do it on Thursday.

First draft feedback

On Friday we handed in our first draft of our film opening The eZ Life. It was shown to all Media students who were given feedback forms to add their thoughts on how we could improve our opening the second time around. The majority of the feedback was overwhelmingly positive with 40/60 being a rough average. However many of the feedback sheets did not contain any specific suggestions on how we could improve our opening. There were two which stood out to me as being accurate and useful which can be seen below.

The main reoccurring criticism was that the ending was not good enough. As a group we expected this as we were unprepared to make the end scene and rushed it to fit the deadline. In order to improve the ending we have started to arrange make up to make Issak look like a Zombie and will gradually incorporate it throughout the opening to make it obvious to the audience he is turning into a Zombie.

Also many people thought the drug effect which Issak edited over the party scenes was good but lasted for to long. As a result of this Issak reduced the time that the effect lasts for on Premiere today. So that our main focus can from now be the Zombie scene.

First cut of The eZ Life

This is the first draft of our film opening The eZ Life. We handed our first draft in on Friday this is so it can be shown to all Media students. Everyone who watches it will complete a feedback form with ways we can improve our opening. As a group we will look through the feedback and take the best criticisms and try to address them for our final opening. Our main concern currently is the ending, which was rushed and not done to a good enough standard. This will be what we focus our efforts on next week along with other issues that are given to us as feedback.

Representation

Today in class I created a PowerPoint to answer questions we were given to answer about the representation of characters in our film opening. I found this was useful to do as it it helped us think through the key concepts of our film opening and develop the characters.

Institution

Film 4 is a British digital television channel available in the UK. It is owned and run by Channel Four Television Corporation that screens films. We chose Film 4 because we felt it best suited our film. They produce both main stream and independent films. The first film they produced was Walter in 1982. Some of their most notable films produced are:

  • 12 Years A Slave (co-produced with Regency Enterprises)
  • 24 Hour Party People
  • The Inbetweeners Movie

Shot list

Today in lesson I made a list of shots that we need to film to complete our opening sequence. This will be useful to have whilst we our filming and trying to remember what we have left to film.

Tenacious D

As a group we watched this scene from Tenacious D after Issak suggested it. The idea of having a clip of the visions Jack Black has and then putting the clip of reality right after was both funny and made the genre obvious. We can incorporate an idea like this into our film The eZ Life. Also the start of it is one of many ways to show drug taking. We will be showing it differently but it is good to see there are other ways we can do it.
